Wow Communities

In contrast to some other types of games, MMORPGs have a heavy character-progression element and, aligned to this, they tend to heavily emphasise collective gameplay and the community aspect of gaming.

Many communities revolve around the Discord application which is the current favourite community management resource for most games and gamers.

Guilds

Guilds of WoW

The most important community to many players will be their in-game guild, which are best found via the Guild Finder tool in game (default hot-key 'j'). Guilds are closer-knit groups of players from the same server (or connected servers), with guild-members conducting many activities together.

There are guilds focussed on particular aspects of gameplay (M+ dungeon guilds, Heroic Raid Guilds, Mythic Raid Guilds, PvP Guilds, Achivement/Collector guilds) and those which aim to cater for a particular type of person ('older' players, parents, members of LGBTQIA community, etc.).

It's a better experience for guild members when they share similar in-game aims (e.g. Heroic Raiding and Mythic+, or mount-collecting, or PvP). And some guilds are just plain terrible - don't be afraid to leave a guild which simply doesn't suit who you are or how you want to play WoW.

Non-Guild Communities

There are also many non-guild communities which allows for cross-server communities to form, as guilds are restricted to players on the same server group and faction (Alliance - Yay or Horde - Boo!). These communities often also have a focus similar to those described for a Guild, but are in general less of a tight-knit group.

Many non-guild communities will utilise Discord as the central community resource to connect members together (as will many Guilds!).

Wowhead maintains a list of some key community discord servers here.
