Why Use Addons?

Addons are used to provide different information of functionality to World of Warcraft with a wide range of options available as noted below.

Whilst some players play with no Addons at all, and others with very few, addons are highly valued by most players for their ability to provide new and different information on all aspects of WoW Gameplay. Addons information on this site has been divided into categories to help players find the type of addon they are looking for, including addons to:

Addons can also do many other things - the potential is near limitless particularly through the use of WeakAuras.

Installing & Managing Addons

There are several programs designed to help players manage their WoW Addons and keep them up to date. WoWUp is a preferred program for its simple interface and its incorporation of a range of addon sources including the popular WoW Interface and Curseforge sites, but also including the TukUI site which hosts one of the most popular UI replacement suites, ElvUI.

WowUp is a desktop client that allows players to search, install, update, and remove addons with just one button click in most cases. Highly Recommended.

UI Replacements & Competitive Gameplay

Some addons are replacements for one or more components of the Blizzard standard User Interface, such as character and unit frames, nameplates, action bars and the minimap. These are particularly significant and are therefore detailed separately on the WoW User Interface page.

Many addons are also designed to improve player performance particularly in group content such as Dungeons, Raids and organised PvP. Given there are more than enough of these addons to make their own page, these are also separately deatiled on the Competitive Gampeplay Addons page.

Inventory & Economy

This group of addons are designed to assist in the management of player inventory (both bag and bank), money-making and auctioning.

WoW includes a thriving community of players who dedicate all or part of their gameplay towards making money, with commuinity members frequently referring to themselves as 'goblins'.

Adibags is a modular and customisable interface for both bag and bank inventory.

Adibags has downloadable extensions for different types of inventory items to enable very flexible classification in categories including: By profession, by zone, BoEs, grey items, quest items, armour types, etc.

Users can also easily create their own categories for items, with categorisation automatically shared across all characters.

Alternative: ArkInventory

TradeSkillMaster is the premier auctioning, crafting management and inventory management addon for WoW, designed in particular for players who pursue gold-making (sometimes called 'goblins' for their love of gold) as a significant part of their WoW gameplay.

TSM draws auction data on a per-realm and per-region basis for every item in WoW, providing current and historical information on auction sales prices through a database downloaded via a desktop application. TSM also includes calculations for crafting, milling, prospecting and disenchanting information for profession use. TSM allows users to declare variable buy and sell prices for all items by group, which can be hard-coded or vary based on current or historical auction-house prices.

TSM is a complex addon which can be used effectively by a novice, but where experience will also yield increased rewards through more flexible pricing in the server marketplace. There are many excellent video guides on setting up and using TSM including by players Hazelnutty and Samadan.

TSM is a resource-intensive addon and may not be appropriate for players on systems with lower CPU and/or RAM. TSM also requires users to download a desktop application in order to maintain the pricing database utilised by the in-game addon.

Alternatives: Auctioneer (for auctioning) and The Undermine Journal (for pricing tooltips).

Accountant is an addon for understanding money flow for a character. Accoutant records the source of all revenue and expenditure of gold, displayable across all characters or on a per-character basis, and also by session, day, week, or for all time.

Accountant recognises sources of income and expenditure by categories including training costs, taxi fares (use of flight paths), trading, mail, looting, quest rewards, repair costs, merchant purchases and sales, the auction house and the black market.

Loot Appraiser utilises auction price data to estimate the value of loot retrieved off of NPCs in WoW. The addon is particularly useful for transmog farmers of pre-current content, for sale on the Auction House.

Loot Appraiser requires an up-to-date pricing source such as through use of TSM or The Undermine Journal.

New Openables

New Openables identifies containers in a players inventory that can be 'opened' to reveal contents, such as lock boxes, caches, and chests. New Openables also identifies item 'parts' that can be combined into a usable item, such as identifying 10 motes that can be transformed into a spirit, or old-world herb parts than can be combined into usable herbs.

Worth It

Worth It is designed for players to determine the most profitable activities to engage in for money making on their server, based on auction house prices. The addon utilises data from recorded farm routes, utilising approximate drop rates and auction data to determine an approximate value per hour of effort.

Quality of Life

Quality of Life addons to improve general WoW gameplay.

Addon Control Panel provides an in-game interface for enabling and disabling addons during gameplay and without logging off your character - vastly speeding up the process of enabling or disabling an addon, and also in troubleshooting any addon problems experienced.

ACP also allows for the saving, naming, and loading of 'addon sets' which can be loaded across characters. This feature is extremely useful for consistency of addons across characters.

Altoholic provides an easy interface for understanding your alts, for all those...altholics out there.

Information is expensive, including level, equipped gear, gear in inventory and bank, professions, guild, and achievements. Altoholic even includes features such as allowing searching across all character inventory/banks for that item you're looking for.

Covenant Mission Helper

Covenant Mission Helper adds an additional panel to the Covenant Command Table to show the predicted outcome of a mission based on the characters and troops selected and their level.

Venture Plan

Venture Plan alters the Covenant Command Table interface to provide a more detailed overview of available missions in an easier to read format. The included Cursed Adventurer's Guide also predicts the outcome of the mission based on characters and troops selected and their levels, independently of the previous Covenant Mission Helper addon (i.e. these addons are complimentary to each other). Players can also choose to submit their missions conducted and the outcome to be added to the Venture Plan database, improving future simulation outcomes.

Venture Plan is one of the few Addons recommended here which is not available via addon-manager programs such as WoWUp, and can instead be downloaded from here.

Friend Groups

Friend Groups allows for the creation and maintenance of groups within the WoW friends list (default key 'o') which is very handy for remembering where those friends came from (old guilds, that random PUG group, that whacky person you just want to run with again, etc.).

FG works through appending the created group name to your notes on each friend.

Guild Roster Manager

Guild Roster Manager is exceptionally handy for both GMs and Officers and guild members. For GMs and Officers GRM allows for advanced management of guild members including alts, join dates, leave dates, number of times joined (for serial leavers!) and even kickings from the guild with a ban list also for those players who are never, ever, welcome back.

Handynotes is an addon that allows the placement of programmed icons and text on the WoW map. There is a large library of handynotes plugins, most often for each game zone, adding locations and rewards for rare mobs, battle pets, treasures, and other points of interest. Very highly recommended.

Paste allows for the parsing of multiple lines of text or lists of commands into WoW, which is not ordinarily able to be done through the default text entry line (via the chat box).

Commands will still follow the standard WoW rules - so paste cannot be used, for example, to bypass the Global Cooldown.

Postal enhances the mailbox interface through advanced address book features (alts, guild, friends) and management features (open all mail, all Auction House bought, sold, expired or outbid). Postal will also provide summary information on exiting the mail interface, such as how much gold was retrieved from successful auctions.

Titan Panel is a highly customisable panel which occupies either the top-edge or bottom-edge of your WoW Interface. The panel can be configured through multiple plugins to provide a wide array of information on your character and gameplay including clock and gametime, inventory, gold, location, loot specialisation, game performance (fps, connection lag), experience, quests, mail, reputation, etc.

The panel can be configured to auto-hide if desired.

Deja Character Stats allows players to select what data is shown in a character information panel, enabling full customisation of items shown including primary and secondary stats, and offensive and defensive statistics.

Executive Assistant acts like a real-life EA, or an advanced to-do list and schedule. It allows for tasks to be programmed across a WoW account, and/or on a per-character basis, for completion on a daily, weekly or other timed basis.

An excellent addon to assist forgetful players (who isn't!) to remember to create a shadestone every day on their alchemist, or to farm soul ash on that under-geared alt.

Macro Toolkit is currently out of date, but will hopefully be updated in the future.

When up to date the addon provides a very useful interface for easier programming of both simpler and advanced macros.

Addons for Professions

Addons to improve player experience with both gathering and crafting professions.

Gathermate2 adds visible nodes to either or both of the game map and minimap for gathering professions including Mining (Ore nodes), Herbalism (Herb nodes), Archaeology, Fishing (Fish pools). Very helpful and highly recommended for herbalism and mining in particular.

One Click Enchant places an 'enchant scroll' option within the enchanting window, so a player no longer has to click on vellum in their inventory to enchant a scroll. Simple, helpful.

FarmHUD allows for the player to place a 'heads-up display' for known resource nodes, such as ore and herb nodes, similar to an on-screen radar display. FarmHUD requires a database to draw known nodes from, such as Gathermate2.

Routes can draw a route between known resource nodes of one or more selected types (e.g. Laestrite Ore nodes, or Widowbloom herb nodes) to make an efficient farming route. A route can be drawn automatically based on adjustable rules, and routes can also be drawn manually.

Routes Import/Export adds an import/export function to routes, so that users can share routes (e.g. an efficient herbing route for Bastion) between their WoW clients.

Ackis Recipe List provides additional information on unlearned recipes, such as the zone coordinates for mobs which drop an unlearned recipe. Recommended for those looking for missing profession recipes.

Collecting and Completion

Addons for players who like collecting things, or completing aspects of gameplay including achievement hunters.

Rarescanner will scan the map, and even chat announcements, for rare mobs, treasures, and other rare collectables, and report to you via chat message, or even via a pop-up button and image. Rarescanner readily enables you to find those rare mobs to kill for their sweet loot or for achievement hunting.

All The Things is the addon for completionists. It tracks all mounts, appearances, pets, toys, profession recipes, and more. If you get joy out of the long path to completing collections or achievememts, this is for you.

Narcissus is a customisable high-end appearance-focussed addon with a 'photo' mode enabling the best screenshots available to players in WoW. Highly recommended for those wanting to show off their character and transmog as a screenshot.

mOnoar's Wardrobe Helper lists all appearances a character hasn't yet obtained, arranged by expansion and instance. A handy addon for those focussed on appearance collecting.

Rarity keeps count of how many attempts you have recorded for any drop (item, pet, mount, etc.) and the known rate for that drop. Learn how (un)lucky you've been!

Questing and World Information

Addons for questing and those that improve information about or management of world exploration.

BTWQuests provides a quest-tree interface for quests within an expansion, which for Shadowlands includes quest trees for each zone, the Maw, Torghast, each covenant campaign, Venarii, and the meta-quest achievement requiring completion of the Torghast campaign and the Castle Nathria Raid.

An excellent way to understand where you are in a quest/story tree, and what steps need to be taken next. Highly recommended.

TomTom is a directionality system similar to the TomTom mapmaking system that was highly popular before everyone had a mobile phone with an inbuilt GPS and Google Maps.

Users can add 'waypoints' using coordinates, with coordinates being available for almost everything conceivable on Wowhead. A directional arrow on-screen will point to the nearest (or selected) waypoint.

World Quests List provides more detailed, concise information on World Quests in a zone/expansion - adjusting when the map is zoomed in or out. A fantastic addon for finding which quests give gold rewards, anima rewards, or what rewards are available for a quest in what zone.

Alternative: World Quest Tracker

Atlas replaces in-game maps of instances and many other areas with alternate, more detailed maps.
